Client Overview

A private farmhouse in Pune District, Maharashtra — located in an area that suffers frequent and extended power outages. To keep the property running through the cuts, the owner had been relying heavily on a diesel generator, burning roughly 15–20 litres of diesel every single day.

The goal was clear: reliable, round-the-clock power that ends the dependence on both an unreliable grid and expensive, noisy, polluting diesel.

Project Background

At 15–20 litres/day, the farmhouse was consuming an estimated ~6,400 litres of diesel a year — a recurring cost of several lakh rupees annually, on top of the refuelling logistics and generator maintenance that come with running a DG set every day.

A solar-plus-storage system was the obvious answer, but the scale of backup required — enough to ride through long outages and run overnight — called for a very large battery bank. This is where an upcycled second-life battery solution made the project both technically and commercially viable.

Solution Delivered

Techedge designed and commissioned an 80 kW solar + 288 kWh storage hybrid system:

System Highlights

  • Solar Array: 80 kWp
  • Hybrid Inverter: 80 kW Solis Solarator
  • Battery Bank: 288 kWh — Nunam NESS upcycled LiFePO₄
  • System Type: Hybrid (Solar + Battery + Grid, with DG as last resort)
  • Commissioned: September 2026
  • Headline outcome: Day-to-day diesel usage of 15–20 L/day eliminated

The 80 kWp array generates through the day to run the farmhouse load and recharge the battery bank. The 288 kWh Nunam NESS bank — built across multiple 19-inch rack strings of “Powered by Nunam” HV Series LiFePO₄ modules — then carries the property through the evening, overnight, and through grid outages. The diesel generator, previously run daily, is now only a rare last resort.

Diesel Eliminated

The Diesel-Elimination Impact

The single biggest win is the complete elimination of daily diesel usage.

  • Before: 15–20 litres/day of diesel — roughly 6,400 litres/year
  • After: solar + 288 kWh battery covers the load; the DG set is now a rare backup only

Beyond the rupees, the farmhouse gains silent, clean, automatic power — no more daily refuelling runs, no generator noise and fumes, and no interruption when the grid fails.

Environmental Impact

  • ~1,24,000 kWh/year of clean solar energy generated (est. for 80 kWp in Pune)
  • ~105 tons of CO₂ avoided per year (est. — combined solar generation + diesel eliminated)
  • Second-life batteries: the 288 kWh bank reuses upcycled EV/LiFePO₄ cells, extending their useful life rather than manufacturing new lithium — a genuine circular-economy outcome

Why Nunam Second-Life Batteries

At 288 kWh, the storage is the heart — and the cost centre — of this project. Using Nunam NESS upcycled LiFePO₄ modules made a bank of this size viable:

  • Up to ~30% lower cost than an equivalent new-lithium bank of the same capacity
  • LiFePO₄ safety — the safest lithium chemistry, well suited to a large residential installation
  • Circular economy — repurposed cells that still retain strong usable capacity
  • Scalable rack architecture — modular “Powered by Nunam” HV Series strings, easy to expand or service

This is one of the larger second-life battery deployments Techedge has delivered — a real-world demonstration that upcycled storage can anchor a serious 288 kWh backup system. Learn more about Nunam upcycled batteries.

Conclusion

For a farmhouse that was burning 15–20 litres of diesel a day just to stay powered, this system replaces a recurring, rising, polluting cost with clean solar and a large, cost-effective battery bank — quietly, automatically, and for decades.

“An outage-prone farmhouse that once ran on 15–20 litres of diesel a day now runs on sunshine and stored power — diesel eliminated, silence restored.”
